We've all been there. Legs that feel heavy after a long run, shoulders knotted from hours at a desk or just a busy week that’s left us feeling achy and tired.
When your muscles need some relief, a warm bath and some self care can make a world of difference. Here's how to make the most of your wind-down routine if you have sore, tired muscles.
At a glance:
- Gentle heat boosts circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles while easing tension and supporting recovery
- Warm water helps calm the nervous system and, along with water pressure, can reduce inflammation and muscle soreness
- Keep baths warm, not too hot, and soak for around 15–20 minutes to avoid overstressing the body
- Add Alexandra Kay Time to Ease Muscle Relax Body Oil to your bath to help stimulate circulation and soothe tight areas
- Apply Alexandra Kay Time to Restore Magnesium Lotion to warm skin after your bath to gently soothe tired muscles
Does a hot bath actually relax muscles?
The short answer is yes, and the science backs it up.
Warm water makes your body temperature rise gently, causing blood vessels to dilate and blood flow to increase throughout the body. This improved circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to tired muscle tissue, helping to ease tension and speed up the natural recovery process.
The warmth also signals to your nervous system it tells your body it's safe to relax. The hydrostatic pressure of water also helps reduce inflammation and swelling in muscles and joints.
Water temperature does matter, though. Aim for warm rather than scalding so that you soothe your body rather than stressing it out - around 15 minutes should be enough to help sore, tired muscles.
The water temperature you choose can also depend on why your muscles are sore. For ordinary tired, achy muscles without swelling, heat is more soothing. If the muscles feel inflamed, swollen, or overworked, always start with cold, then warm and finish with cold.
What can you add to a bath to relax muscles?
A warm bath alone can help sore, tired muscles, but what you add to your bath can make a big difference too.
Our certified organic Alexandra Kay Time to Ease Muscle Relax Body Oil can also be used as a bath oil for a soothing, relaxing bath that feels great on tired muscles. Made with warming Ginger and Black Pepper, soothing Peppermint and Eucalyptus and CB2-Skin™ Biofunctional, it’s been created to soothe and relax your muscles.
Add some drops to a warm bath and swirl through the water before stepping in. As you soak, the blend of carefully chosen organic ingredients gets to work. This smooth-as-silk bath oil nourishes your skin as the aromatic oils work through inhalation as well as absorption.
Spend at least 10-15 minutes in the bath and let the warmth do its work while you allow your muscles - and your mind - to relax and unwind.

Your post-bath relaxation routine
When you step out of the bath, your skin is warm, your pores are open, and your muscles are already in a more relaxed state. This is the ideal moment to apply the Alexandra Kay Time to Restore Magnesium Lotion.
Magnesium is the key ingredient in this organic lotion as it’s an essential mineral that plays a central role in muscle function. It regulates muscle contractions, supports the nervous system, and helps the body manage stress.
We combined Zechstein Magnesium Chloride with skin-calming plant active CB2-Skin™ Biofunctional, derived from Patchouli plus hydrating Red Algae and Rice Extracts to support your skin’s natural hydration.
Massage the lotion into your legs, shoulders, back, and any areas of particular tension while your skin is still warm. The act of massage itself adds another layer of comfort, helping to work out any remaining tightness and encouraging lymphatic drainage.
As the lotion absorbs, the Magnesium gets to work supporting the muscle recovery process through the night. Together, the body oil in the bath and the Magnesium lotion applied after create a simple two-step ritual to help relax sore or tired muscles.
