Hydration is the foundation of healthy, radiant skin – and your moisturiser is the daily essential that helps lock in moisture, strengthen your skin barrier and plump fine lines.

At Green People, we take a less-is-more approach to moisturisers and face creams. Our certified organic moisturisers are carefully formulated with pure plant oils and clinically proven actives to nourish, balance and protect, without clogging pores or overloading your skin.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to get the most from your moisturiser, from expert application techniques to choosing the right formula for your skin’s needs, morning and night. Read on to discover how to moisturise your face and neck to maintain smooth, supple and beautifully balanced skin, every day.

At a glance:

  • Apply moisturiser to clean, slightly damp skin using light upward tapping motions for better absorption
  • Choose moisturisers based on your skin type and season: richer for dry/winter, lighter for oily/summer – but use SPF all year round
  • Apply serum before moisturiser to deliver concentrated active ingredients deep into the skin
  • Don’t forget your neck and décolletage - moisturise and protect with SPF to maintain firmness and elasticity
  • Best all-rounder moisturiser: Age Defy+ DD Tinted Moisturiser SPF15 provides hydration, light coverage and protection in one step.
  • Best sensitive moisturiser: Scent-Free 24-Hour Cream offers ultra-gentle hydration, calm and comfort for the most sensitive complexion.

Why use moisturiser?

To keep your face and neck hydrated it’s important to apply moisturiser every day. Doing so will increase hydration levels in the skin and can also deliver a wealth of other skin care benefits.

  • Hydration
  • Plumping
  • Barrier support
  • Calm
  • Protection

Not only will a good quality moisturiser relieve feelings of dry, tight skin, but it also makes skin feel smoother, plumper and more elastic, which all contribute to a youthful complexion.

It should also help to seal tiny gaps in your skin barrier, helping your skin to defend itself better and supporting comfortable, calm skin.

Lastly, moisturisers designed for the daytime are often combined with SPF for protection against UV rays and sometimes also a tint for an even complexion. These multi-tasking moisturisers offer a great all-round experience in one product.

However, not all moisturisers are created equal. The amount of moisturiser you need will depend on the formulation. Moisturisers that contain high levels of ethyl alcohol will usually need to be applied more generously and re-applied more often.

Some moisturisers may also contain ingredients that clog pores, while others feel pleasant but do little to support skin health. Many people find they are sensitive to face creams due to ingredients such as artificial fragrances and ethyl alcohol.

At Green People, we don’t use these ingredients. Instead, we believe in caring for your skin with gentle, naturally derived ingredients, creating moisturisers made with clinically proven plant actives that nourish and support the skin.

We even have a range of scent-free products, developed especially for those with the most sensitive skin. Discover our no.1 scent-free moisturiser now.

All our organic face creams are created around an Aloe Vera-rich base and packed with concentrated goodness. You only need to apply a small amount of moisturiser to feel the benefits: a little goes a long way.

How to apply moisturiser to your face

Many people rub moisturisers into their skin but a better technique is to tap a small amount of moisturiser into your face and neck using light upward movements.

Tapping your moisturiser into your skin will help it to absorb and can also boost circulation.

Your skin should soak up face creams but if your skin surface is clogged with dead skin cells, you may find that your moisturiser won’t absorb easily.

To remove the dead cells, you should exfoliate the skin surface twice weekly. Browse our face scrubs now or, for guidance on choosing the right face scrub for your skin, read our guide to exfoliating.

Which moisturiser should you choose?

When choosing a moisturiser, consider your skin concerns and skin type so that you can get your skin back in balance. Remember, your skin’s needs change with the seasons too, often needing richer creams in winter and lighter textures in summer.

Here’s what we recommend for different skin concerns and types:

Best moisturiser for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin needs gentle ingredients and fragrance-free formulas - choose our Scent Free 24-Hour Cream for fragrance-free hydration with Inulin Prebiotics, Baicalin, Cacay and Evening Primrose Oil.

Best moisturiser for dry skin

For dry skin, use richer creams that contain nourishing ingredients like Shea Butter, Squalane and Evening Primrose - our Vita Min Fix 24 Hour Cream is a great choice for skin that needs extra hydration.

Best moisturiser for mature skin

Mature skin needs hydrating, supporting moisturisers that have skin-boosting ingredients like Cucumber and Hibiscus Extract - we recommend our Age Defy+ Brightening Moisturiser to target age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

For combination, oily or blemish-prone skin

When to apply moisturiser

  • Every morning and evening
  • After cleansing, while skin is still damp
  • Or after facial serum for an extra layer of benefits

Regardless of your skin type, you should moisturise your face and neck every morning and every evening.

It is best to apply your moisturiser to clean skin and ideally you should put your moisturiser on whilst the skin is still slightly damp. This is because a good quality moisturiser will contain humectants which absorb water from the surrounding environment and bind it to the skin.

Applying your moisturiser to damp skin will give this access to a good supply of water that can be locked into the skin.

Applying your moisturiser in the morning will help protect your face and neck from the onslaught of UV light, blue light, dirt, pollution and bacteria it faces throughout the day.

To make sure your skin is adequately protected against these, opt for skin care containing SPF and antioxidant ingredients like Seaweed, Green Tea and Rosemary.

Best moisturisers with SPF

Our moisturisers with built-in SPF contain skin-friendly UV filters and contain antioxidant-rich, natural ingredients.

How to apply moisturiser at night

Our skin’s behaviour changes at night and whilst you sleep it works hard to repair and rehydrate itself.

To do this the skin needs to ‘breathe’ so it is important to thoroughly cleanse your face before you go to sleep and that you do not clog your skin’s surface by applying too much night cream.

Instead, lightly tap a little of your night cream into your face, neck and décolletage.

Your skin’s overnight repair process requires a multitude of nourishing vitamins and minerals so all Green People night creams are densely packed with nutrients that work overnight to allow your skin to remove waste, replenish lost nutrients and repair damage caused during the day.

Best night cream for sensitive skin

A wonderful choice for sensitive skin, Scent Free Truffle Night Cream delivers a blend of redness-reducing Northern Truffle and moisture-binding Ceramides.

Unlike many night creams, it feels light on the skin and is free from all fragrance – ideal if your skin is prone to reactions.

Best night cream for mature skin

If your skin needs an intensive boost of overnight goodness, turn to Age Defy+ Hydra-Glow Night Cream.

Developed with 35 beauty-enhancing actives to rejuvenate your skin as you sleep, you will wake to pillow-soft skin.

It features a blend of pentasaccharide-rich seaweed and an extract from Tara Bush Seed which are proven to give a long-term smoothing and firming action.

Very dry skin? Add a serum to your routine

To get even more moisture into your skin, try applying a serum before you moisturise your face and neck.

Serums are lightweight but highly concentrated, designed to deliver active ingredients deep into the skin. They target concerns like dullness, dehydration and fine lines, while your moisturiser works on locking in hydration.

Apply a few drops of serum to freshly cleansed, slightly damp skin, pressing it gently into the face and neck with upward motions. Follow with your moisturiser to seal in the benefits.

Scent Free Hyaluronic Booster Serum is our top-pick for hydration layering. Apply a few drops before your moisturiser and you’ll be rewarded with dewy, glowing skin.

How to moisturise your neck

As we age, the skin around the neckline loses its structure and starts to sag. Regularly exposing the décolletage to sunlight will exacerbate this process but applying anti-ageing moisturisers and SPF sun care can help keep the skin soft and supple.

Top tip: Make sure to apply SPF behind the neck and along the jawline to help maintain elasticity where sagging often first appears. These easily forgotten parts of your face and neck can show signs of ageing first.

To moisturise the neck, apply your anti-ageing face cream to the throat and neck using light tapping motions. If exposing the décolletage, apply a high-factor antioxidant sun lotion to the skin at least 20 minutes before sun exposure.

Best neck serum

Get your bounce back with Firming Face & Neck Serum, featuring Bacillus Ferment! This postbiotic skin plumper delivers hydration, firmness AND radiance to your face and neck.

We’ve added Marshmallow to keep that hydration locked in, while an Aloe Vera and Chamomile core calms and soothes.

Best SPF for neck & décolletage

To keep your face, neck and chest safe in the sun, we formulate our Scent Free Sun Cream SPF30 with a skin-safe UV filters and a protective blend of Green Tea, Rosemary, Edelweiss and Myrrh.

Also enhanced with organic Aloe Vera and vitamin-rich Cocoa Butter, this ultra-gentle cream is as good at hydrating as protecting.

How to apply eye cream

The skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of the face and because it also has fewer oil glands, it finds it hard to retain moisture. To keep the skin around the eyes well hydrated, apply a nourishing eye cream twice daily to the entire eye contour area, using light tapping motions.
In addition to helping the eye cream to sink into the skin, a tapping motion will boost circulation to the skin and help drain away the excess fluid that can create dark, puffy circles around the eyes. You don’t need to wash off your eye cream, simply leave it to sink into the skin before applying your moisturiser.

Try our Rejuvenating Eye Cream for brightening and hydrating your eye area. Made with polyphenol-rich Everlasting Flower Extract and a Tuberose complex that is proven to target dark circles, crow’s feet and puffiness, this innovative natural eye cream is also gentle on skin.

Facial yoga can also help stimulate circulation to the eye area. Discover our tips for practising facial yoga.
