Navigating the world of cosmetic ingredients can sometimes feel complex, especially with concerns around certain ingredients being 'endocrine disruptors'. If you are starting to look more closely at the labels on your beauty products and sunscreen, you are not alone.

We know how important it is that you can make informed choices that feel right for you and your family. We believe in formulating our certified organic beauty products with transparency and care, using plant-based ingredients to support your skin's natural balance without ingredients you might prefer to avoid.

At a glance

  • Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances that may interfere with the body's hormone system
  • Some ingredients used in cosmetics, like certain parabens, phthalates and chemical UV filters, are being researched for potential endocrine-disrupting activity
  • Choosing fragrance-free products can you help to reduce the number of ingredients your skin is exposed to
  • For a gentle routine, consider the Scent Free Cleanser and Scent Free 24-Hour Cream
  • Opt for a mineral sunscreen like our Scent Free Mineral Sun Cream SPF30,which is free from Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

What are endocrine disruptors?

The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce hormones, which act as chemical messengers in the body. They regulate everything from metabolism and growth to mood and reproduction.

According to organisations like the Endocrine Society, an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) is a substance that can interfere with this system. The science in this area is still emerging, but concern often focuses on the cumulative effect of being exposed to many different substances over time.

At Green People, we take a cautious approach. We have always chosen to formulate our products without ingredients like parabens, phthalates or Triclosan, focussing instead on gentle, plant-based actives that nourish, calm and balance your skin.

Common ingredients you might want to know about

If you're looking to build a beauty routine free from potential endocrine disruptors, it can be helpful to know which ingredients are part of the conversation. Here are a few examples that are often discussed.

Parabens: Often used as preservatives in moisturisers and shampoos, some parabens have been found to weakly mimic oestrogen activity in laboratory studies.

Phthalates: These are used to make scents last longer and help creams and lotions spread more easily.

Some chemical UV filters: Ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, used in some chemical sunscreens, are under review for their potential to interfere with hormone pathways. We choose to formulate our sunscreens with different UV filters, including non-nano minerals.

Others include: Triclosan, certain siloxanes (like Cyclopentasiloxane), and BHA/BHT are also on the list of ingredients that researchers are investigating for potential endocrine effects.

Welcome to skin care you can trust

Choosing your skin and hair care should be a simple, enjoyable ritual. For over 25 years, we have formulated our certified organic products with a 'free from' philosophy, choosing not to use ingredients like parabens, phthalates, SLS, synthetic fragrances or the chemical sun filters mentioned above.

"When my daughter Sandra had skin allergies, I couldn’t find products that were gentle enough for her. This is why I started Green People in 1997 - to create truly organic and natural skin care that you can trust to be kind to your skin and the planet."

Sunscreen is a daily essential, but it is also a category where some of the most discussed potential endocrine disruptors are found. If you are looking to avoid chemical filters like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate and Homosalate, a mineral-based sunscreen is an excellent choice.

Our Scent Free Mineral Sun Cream SPF30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection using non-nano Zinc Oxide. It has a lightweight, non-greasy texture that feels more like a daily moisturiser than a traditional sun cream, sinking in beautifully without leaving a white cast.

For the body, the Scent Free Sun Cream SPF30 is a family favourite. Dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive and eczema-prone skin, it contains a blend of Zinc Oxide and safe chemical UV filters, along with antioxidant-rich plant extracts to nourish the skin while it protects.
